During the Community Service Worker program at Medix College students will grow to understand the complexities of present-day community work practice, the helping process, human development, first aid/CPR and crisis prevention. Students will also practice with individuals and families and individuals, gain an understanding of the human health model, and explore research methods.
An off-site practicum will give students experience in the industry and allows them to begin putting into practice concepts learned in the classroom. The practicum lets students exercise and perfect their skills in an environment that will be similar to the work environments they will work in upon graduation.
Graduates will be prepared to work with clients from a range of age groups, with a variety of social and emotional issues and will be able to apply for membership as a Certified Community Service Worker through the Canadian Council of Professional Certification (CCPC) after they’ve fulfilled the CCPC’s requirements.
Some of the major responsibilities of a Community Service Worker is assisting individuals and families through support advocacy, and collaborating with other agencies to help clients in meeting emotional, health and social needs.
