Veterinary Assistant

Graduates of Sprott Shaw College’s Veterinary Assistant program are qualified to provide a wide range of animal care services in both office and clinical settings.

This program emphasizes administration, animal restraint, nutrition, pharmacology, clinical nursing, and diseases and prevention including hands-on training within veterinary hospitals.

The Veterinary Assistant program includes a practicum placement which enables instructors to observe the student in a practice situation while providing the student with the opportunity to gain direct exposure to their chosen career.

Upon graduating from the Veterinary Assistant program, students will be able to:

  • Schedule appointments
  • Perform reception and bookkeeping duties
  • Handle and restrain animals safely
  • Performing basic grooming skills
  • Demonstrate knowledge of parasite control
  • Understand basic veterinary terminology with applications to anatomy, physiology and diseases
  • Be familiar with common surgical procedures
  • Instruct in homecare instructions
  • Assist veterinary technologists in taking X-rays and administering anesthesia
