Registered Dental Assistants (RDAs) are key members of a dental office team who provide support to dentists during patient check-ups, treatments and other procedures. They also carry out important functions with regard to hygiene, infection control, patient records and radiographs. Dentists need RDAs who are well trained and versatile in order to ensure their practices run smoothly.
In Manitoba, students enrolled in an Intra Oral Dental Assistant program study subjects like anatomy, physiology, oral facial sciences, pathology, dental radiography and more. Prevention of disease transmission, preventative dentistry, nutrition and practice management are usually also covered.
Additionally, many colleges offer valuable experience during practical placements working in a private practice with a dentist. Graduates who successfully complete the Intra Oral Dental Assistant programs are eligible to write the National Level II Certification exam offered by the National Dental Assisting Examination Board (NDAEB). This two-part NDAEB certificate includes a written examination followed by the Clinical Practical Evaluation. All graduates must successfully challenge this exam before they can perform Intra-Oral skills or be licensed in the province of Manitoba.
