Diploma Program Information

Become a Teaching Assistant (TA) or Special Education Assistant and help teachers deliver special support to kids with special needs from K to Grade 12 by assisting with behavior management, social skills development, curriculum implementation, and personal care and physical assistance. 

Under the direction of classroom teachers or resource teachers, a Specialist Education Teaching Assistant:

• Provides special attention to students with physical, learning or emotional needs
• Implements individualized or group instruction in communication skills, behavioural management, life skills and adaptive physical education
• Assist in modifying curriculum, assignments and tests for students with special needs
• May provide personal assistance to students in toileting, positioning, mobility, feeding, grooming and dressing, or in in transferring students to and from wheelchairs, desks, special equipment and work areas.

Upon successful completion of the Special Education Teaching Assistant program you will be able to:

• Support and promote inclusionary practices for all students from Kindergarten to Grade 12
• Use technology to support students with wide ranges of abilities
• Plan and implement program plans while focusing on social, emotional, cognitive, communicative and physical development
• Identify children’s intellectual, emotional, social and physical performance and how to support these students in the classroom
• Use counseling techniques for children and youth
• Teach self-care skills to students with various abilities

This program includes 2 mandatory practicums.  The first practicum will be in an elementary school setting, and the second practicum will be in a Middle/High School Setting.
