Sprott Shaw College, one of the largest providers of Practical Nursing training in BC prepares students for one of the most in-demand health care career opportunities in BC. Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) care for patients under the direction of physicians and registered nurses in hospitals, residential and home care environments.
The curriculum at Sprott Shaw College‘s Practical Nursing Program is based on the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) Standards of Practice Framework. These include the Scope of Practice Standards, Professional Standards, and the Practice Standards as set out by BCCNM.
Upon successful completion of the Practical Nursing courses at Sprott Shaw, graduates will be qualified to:
Sprott Shaw’s Practical Nursing program includes the Nonviolent Crisis Intervention© Seminar using the Crisis Prevention Institute© curriculum and certified training. All students will be able to take the exam to become Blue Card™ endorsed.
After successful completion of the practical nursing courses and all practical experiences, graduates will be eligible to write the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Exam (CPNRE). After successfully passing the CPNRE exam, graduates must then apply to the CLPNBC for a license to practice in BC as an LPN.

Practical Nursing program students are eligible to apply for Athabasca University’s Bachelor of Nursing (Post-LPN) program.
At Athabasca University, successful candidates will receive the opportunity to complete all of the non-nursing, required, support, and option theory courses for their Bachelor of Nursing through distance education.
As students continue to work in their field, they can complete their baccalaureate nursing theory courses through a flexible learning environment. Graduates of this program are eligible to write the National Council Licensure Examination – Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN) and become registered nurses (RNs).
The Health Information Management (HIM) program at Anderson College in London, Ontario, offers classes starting throughout the year.
