PN Diploma Program Information

The Practical Nursing (PN) program at Sprott Shaw College prepares students for one of the hottest health care career opportunities in BC.  Practical Nurses care for patients under the direction of physicians and registered nurses and take vital signs, such as blood pressure, temperature, pulse and respirations. They can distribute medication to patients, treat bedsores, prepare and give injections, apply dressings, insert catheters and perform other personal treatment. They also help patients with bathing, dressing and personal hygiene.  Practical nurses also may collect samples for testing and perform routine laboratory tests.

Upon completion of the Practical Nursing courses at Sprott Shaw, graduates will be qualified to:

  • Monitor patient vital signs
  • Assist patients with personal care activities
  • Practice wound care and infection control management
  • Monitor nutritional intake
  • Perform specimen collection
  • Administer medication
  • Perform medical assessments
  • Intravenous device management
  • Apply the entry-level competencies (CLPNBC, 2009) to provide safe, competent and ethical nursing care
  • In accordance with current legislation, apply the standards of practice and code of ethics as directed by the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of BC (CLPNBC) and the Health Professions Act of BC
  • Use critical thinking for clinical decision-making

Sprott Shaw’s Practical Nursing program includes the Nonviolent Crisis Intervention© Seminar using the Crisis Prevention Institute© curriculum and certified training. All students will be able to take the exam to become Blue Card™ endorsed.

After successful completion of the practical nursing courses and all practical experiences, graduates will be eligible to write the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Exam (CPNRE).  After successfully passing the CPNRE exam, graduates must then apply to the CLPNBC for a license to practice in BC as an LPN.
