Personal Support Worker Program

Home-based care for the elderly or those who are recovering from illness or surgery is growing and creating a demand for qualified personal support workers (PSWs).

The Personal Support Worker program at CTS Canadian Career College trains graduates to excel in Ontario’s health care sector.

PSW courses at CTS Canadian Career College include:

  • The Role of the PSW
  • Individuality of the Person
  • Developing Interpersonal Skills
  • Assisting a Person with Mobility
  • Household Management including Meal Preparation
  • Personal Hygiene
  • Taking vital signs
  • Cognitive Impairment and Mental Health Issues
  • Assisting a Person to Manage Ongoing Conditions
  • Assisting a Person with Medications
  • Assisting a Person Who is Dying
  • First Aid & CPR Level C/AED (training in the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED)

Personal Support Worker students also will participate in a Precepted Clinical Placement and a Supervised Clinical Placement.

Upon successful completion of the PSW program graduates write a comprehensive final exam set out by the National Association of Career Colleges (NACC).  The NACC final exam evaluates the theory component of the PSW training and determines whether the candidate has the required level of knowledge to do the job safely and effectively.

Personal Support Workers find employment in community or institutional setting such as hospitals, long-term facilities, home-care or adult day programs.
