Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy Assistant

Occupational Therapy Assistants (OTA) and Physiotherapy Assistants (PTA) play a critical role in assisting occupational therapists and physiotherapists with treatment plans for those recovering from surgery, dealing with chronic conditions and the aging population.  Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy Assistants aid clients in their treatment plans, monitor progress and share the client’s development with the Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist.

OTA and PTA Program Overview

The courses in the Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy Assistant program at Eastern College will cover:

• Anatomy and Physiology
• An introduction to Psychology and Mental Health
• An Introduction to Biomechanics and Applied Kinesiology
• Human Growth and Development
• Rehabilitation Processes
• Human Disorders and Disabilities
• PTA Therapeutic Processes
• OTA Therapeutic Processes
• Standard First Aid/CPR Level C

Graduates will meet the standards of the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists and the Canadian Physiotherapy Association through a combination of theoretical study and hands-on workplace practicums.

Accreditation

The Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy Assistant Program at the Halifax campus of Eastern College, has been accredited by the Occupational Therapist Assistant and Physiotherapist Assistant Education Accreditation Program (OTA & PTA EAP) in collaboration with Physiotherapy Education Accreditation Canada (PEAC) and the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT).
