HVAC programs at Ontario schools provide the training that gives you a broad set of skills to begin or build your career. HVAC certificate courses give a general overview of heating and cooling while diploma programs provide for in depth exploration and hands-on-training through lab work and sometimes work placement practicums. Courses in HVAC and HVAC-R may include but are not limited to: Sheet metal fabrication, Installation and maintenance of heating systems and ventilation systems, learning how to read blue prints, and learning about workplace safety.

HVAC FAQs

What is the difference between HVAC and HVAC-R?

  • HVAC is for heating, ventilation and air conditioning and the R on the end stands for refrigeration.

What are the Admission Requirements for an HVAC Program?

  • Generally an HVAC training school in Ontario will require an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) (high school diploma), a GED, or someone with Mature Student Status.  You also may be required to take an entrance exam and undergo an interview.

How long are the training Programs?

  • Pre-Apprentice training programs are anywhere from less than a year for a certificate to five years; with diploma programs taking about two years.

What skills can I learn in school?

  • Training programs offer hands-on instruction in the design, installation and maintenance of heating and cooling systems for both residential and commercial systems. HVAC training courses also include understanding blueprints, using common tools and equipment found in the industry. Most HVAC schools provide preparation for their students to write the required certification exams.

Do I need to be HVAC Certified to Get a Job?

  • Employers are increasingly requesting that job applicants have formal HVAC education and certification.

  • According to the Department of Employment and Social development, over 93% of recent graduates are employed.

What is the average salary?
