The Health Care Assistant (HCA) diploma program will equip you with the hands-on skills and knowledge to perform as a front-line caregiver. Graduates of Sprott Shaw College’s Health Care Assistant program will be able to, under the direction and supervision of a health care professional, provide care to patients that promotes and maintains their physical, emotional, spiritual, cognitive, and social well-being.
Health Care Assistants (HCAs) are also known as Resident Care Attendants (RCAs) or Care Aides, help patients and their families deal with health challenges such as regular age related issues or mental health issues.
HCA’s play an important role in the health care team by promoting and assisting clients maintain their health, safety, independence, comfort and well-being. A Health Care Aide provides personal care assistance and services that supports the unique needs of clients and their families under the direction and supervision of other health care professionals.
Students will develop their knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to be effective front-line care-givers. Students will receive training in:
The Health Care Assistant program also includes the Nonviolent Crisis Intervention© Seminar using the Crisis Prevention Institute© curriculum and training. Students will be able to take the exam to become Blue Card™ endorsed.
Students will also participate in clinical and practical training.
Graduates Sprott Shaw College’s HCA program are eligible for registration with the BC Care Aide and Community Health Worker Registry to demonstrate their competence and credentials.
