Dental Assistant Program Overview

Sprott Shaw’s Dental Assistant program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada (CDAC). CDAC develops and approves requirements for educational programs educating and training in consultation with its partners,

This program meets the regulations governing certified dental assisting practices as defined by the British Columbia College of Oral Health Professionals (BCCOHP). Upon graduation from the program, you will be eligible to write the National Dental Assisting Board (NDAB) examination. After passing the NDAB exam, you will be eligible to apply for licensure with the BC College of Oral Health Professionals to become a Certified Dental Assistant.

Dental Assistant Program Learning Objectives

Graduates will be able to: 

  • Provide a variety of supportive and direct patient care dental procedures 
  • Understand and work within the bylaws associated with provincial regulations.
  • Know and practice universal precautions and infection control
  • Organizing equipment and materials used in procedures
  • Attend to a patient’s comfort and collect and update their health histories 
  • Assist with preventative, orthodontic, and prosthodontics intraoral procedures.
  • Provide instruction in oral self-care, disease prevention, post-operative care, and nutritional counselling.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a team to provide quality oral care.
  • Perform routine maintenance of instruments and equipment.
  • Perform fundamental practice management procedures including inventory control of dental supplies, patient bookings, and payment collection.
