Continuing Care Aide Program Information

The need for care workers is increasing across the country, as the population ages, creating a growing demand for trained and qualified caregivers. If you see yourself as a caregiver who enjoys working with people, consider the Home Support Worker/Personal Care Attendant program at Eastern College.

The Continuing Care Assistant Diploma program is recognized by and licensed through the Health Association of Nova Scotia (HANS) and overseen by the Nova Scotia Department of Seniors and Long-Term Care (DSLTC). You will receive necessary theory and hands-on training that prepares you for this in-demand career. You’ll cover all aspects of CCA modalities, including speciality training in dealing with Alzheimer’s, dementia and palliative care.

You can take advantage of free tuition for the Continuing Care Assistant (CCA) program which is being funded by the Seniors and Long-Term Care division of the Nova Scotia Government. You must be a Canadian permanent resident or citizen to qualify.

As a Personal Care Attendant, also known as a Health Care AideHome Care WorkerHome Care AidePersonal Support Worker (PSW) or Health Care Assistant, you will provide support to the elderly, disabled or those recovering from illness or injury.  Your role will be to assist clients with daily routines such as personal hygiene, dressing, monitoring medication intake, preparing light meals and feeding and running errands.

Training includes:

  • An introduction to the Continuing Care Assistant (CCA) program and the Health Care Sector
  • Communication in a care setting (including documentation)
  • Environmental Safety
  • Body Mechanics
  • Body structure, function and related health issues
  • Care setting management
  • Nutrition and meal preparation
  • Personal Care
  • Mental health and palliative care
  • Alzheimer Disease and other Dementia care courses
  • Acute care
  • Standard First Aid, CPR Level C and WHMIS
  • Mentorship

Students receive the following certifications:

  • LEAP Long-Term Care Pallium Canada
  • Alzheimer Disease and Other Dementia Care Course
  • Standard First Aid/CPR Level C training
  • Food Hygiene Course or Basic Food Safety Training (BFST)
  • WHMIS Awareness
  • Occupational Health and Safety Act introduction
