A Community and Developmental Service Worker is employed by social service, mental health and government agencies to administer and implement social assistance programs and community services to those in need. At Oxford College you will receive the training and skills for this rewarding career where you can change people’s lives.

Program Focus:

At Oxford College, students will learn to:

  • Interview clients to obtain case history and background information
  • Assess clients’ relevant skill strengths and deficits
  • Assist clients in locating and accessing community resources such as legal, medical and financial assistance, housing, employment, transportation, assistance with moves, day care and other referral services
  • Assist clients in developing plans of action while providing necessary support
  • Prepare intake reports
  • Counsel clients living in group homes and halfway houses, supervise their activities and assist in pre-release and release planning
  • Provide assistance to other professionals in selecting and admitting clients to appropriate programs
  • Assess client’s eligibility for social benefits
  • Evaluate client’s progress and effectiveness of treatment programs
  • Provide crisis intervention and emergency shelter services
  • Implement life skills workshops, substance abuse treatment programs, behaviour management programs, youth services programs and other community and social service programs under the supervision of social services or health care professionals
  • Provide information and obtain feedback on client’s overall progress with health care providers and other social service agencies
  • Maintain program statistics for purposes of evaluation and research
