Child and Youth Care Worker

Youth Care Workers work with other medical and mental health professionals to help children and youth overcome social, emotional, behavioural and mental health issues.  If you can see yourself working with young people to empower them to overcome their daily challenges, consider a career as a Child and Youth Care Worker.  As a compassionate professional, you will work with other industry professionals to determine the best course of action for the well-being of children, adolescents, and their families. 

Child and Youth Care Worker Program Overview

Graduates from Eastern College leave the program with skills and knowledge acquired from theoretical study, practicums, and field placement experience that ensures they have a well-rounded foundation of skills.

Child and Youth Care Courses include:

  • Child, Adolescent and Adult Development
  • Child and Youth care issues, approaches and practice
  • Mental Health Practices
  • CYCW Professional Observation
  • Family Issues & Family ties
  • Group Work
  • Human Growth & Development
  • Interpersonal Communication
  • Social Issues
  • Social Training

Students enrolled in the Child & Youth Care Program Receive:

  • Critical field related certifications include Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) or Theme-Centered Interaction (TCI);
  • First Aid/CPR
  • Acquired Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST).
  • Food Handler's certification
  • Fire and Safety training
  • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems (WHMIS)

A field placement is also included as part of this program.

Education Pathways through Mount Saint Vincent University

Graduates of the Eastern College NS Diploma in Child and Youth Care Worker are eligible to receive admission with advanced standing to Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) Child and Youth Study Degree Program. Students must meet the requirements for admission for transfer students described in the MSVU calendar.
