H airstylist (but often called a hairdresser), is the nationally designated trade under the Interprovincial Standards Red Seal Program approved by the CCDA, is an occupation that dates back thousands of years and will never go out of fashion or become obsolete.
Hairstylists shampoo, cut, style and chemically treat hair and work in existing hair salons, or as independent hairstylists in their own hairdressing salons. They also work in the fashion and entertainment industries.

In BC, the Hairstylist program requires the candidate to demonstrate competency in a practical assessment in addition to the written examination.
You can become certified as a Hairstylist by completing a Hairstylist program or by challenging the certification. Students in high school can begin apprenticeship through either the Secondary School Apprenticeship (SSA) program or the ACE IT program. ACE IT is a dual-credit program that enables students to earn high school graduation credits and the opportunity to receive credit for the first level of the technical training in an Industry Training Authority (ITA) program and may lead to apprenticeship.
You will need to complete a hairstyling training course and an apprenticeship to receive a Certificate of Apprenticeship through the Workplace Training Branch Apprenticeship Offices. Hairstyling programs at Ontario colleges are usually one-year certificate programs and include training from industry professionals in on-site salon labs. Courses in hairstyling include learning about the latest hairstyle trends, cutting and coloring techniques as well as chemical treatments. Other courses include business, communications and about sanitation. Once you pass your courses and meet the requirements, you will need to submit your application for the Certificate of Qualification and pass an exam.
Becoming a Hair Stylist in Nova Scotia
Completing a hair styling at a post-secondary school with on the job training is usually required or completion of a 2 or 3-year hairstyling apprenticeship program. Trade certification for hairstylists is compulsory in Nova Scotia. The regulatory body for hairstylists is the Cosmetology Association of Nova Scotia.
