Y ou may often hear the terms Electrical Engineering and Electrical Technology and those that are new to electrical work may find career paths and the education required, a bit confusing. First you need to know that kind of jobs you want to do and find out what you need to do to get there.

Electrical Technology programs are designed to prepare you for a career as an electrician who is a part of the construction trades that performs the electrical wiring in new construction or in existing buildings.

Because most states in the US require both in-class training, and work experience, a common path to becoming a licensed electrician includes a combination of formal education at a technical or vocational school and apprenticeship training

What Electricians Do

Electricians are responsible for installing, repairing and maintaining electrical power, lighting, communications and control systems in both residential and commercial buildings.

Duties of an Electrician are:

  • Reading and understanding blueprints and technical diagrams
  • Installing, repairing and maintaining wiring
  • Inspecting electrical components
  • Testing to identify electrical issues
