If You Attended Everest College in Ontario What Are The Education Options For You

On Thursday, February 19, 2014 the superintendent of private career colleges suspended the Everest College of Business, Technology and Health Care's license to operate in Ontario. The move, made because of concerns the college was not "financially responsible," was done with the best interests of students in mind, but it left 2,400 students wondering what their futures entail.

Ontario's Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities, the governing body for private career colleges, told students to talk to the ministry for help in applying for a tuition refund from a provincial fund set up to handle such a situation. That fund, however, has a cap of $3 million.  Students can also transfer to other schools by applying to the ministry and providing a student claim form, student enrolment contract, transcripts and proof of payment for tuition and books.

In the Ontario, Everest College had campuses in Barrie, Brampton, two campuses in Hamilton, Kitchener, Mississauga, Newmarket, North York, two campuses in Ottawa, Scarborough, Sudbury, Toronto and Windsor.

Mohawk College spokesperson Jay Robb said college officials were busy looking over its programs to find overlap with Everest College courses.

Mark Harrington, president of the National Academy of Health and Business on King Street East, said that the school had plans in place to accommodate students in all programs except information technology.   The National Academy stated it will recognize the tuition already paid to Everest College.

Herzing College has locations in Toronto and Ottawa and has said it is taking in students without transcripts and in some cases, without tuition.

Ottawa's Algonquin and Willis Colleges say they'll be holding information sessions for former Everest College students as well.

If Everest students complete their applications to the ministry within the required 14 days, some students should see themselves in classes at other colleges by mid-March.  Everest College students are encouraged to contact the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU) at 1-866-330-3395 for information regarding next steps.
