Alberta Launches Pilot Project To Help More Aboriginals Enter Construction

The Alberta Government today announced a new pilot project, the Alberta Aboriginal Construction Career Centre program, that will help more than 600 aboriginal people receive skills training for construction jobs.  According to the government, the province will contribute $1 million toward new construction training centres at Bow Valley College in Calgary and NorQuest College in Edmonton.

Sharon Carry, president of Bow Valley College says “Through fast, focused interventions, such as job preparation and skills training, these centres will play an important role in helping to address projected skilled labour shortages in the construction industry and connect Aboriginal peoples to well-paying jobs.”

The two-year project will deliver career counselling and construction-related training for more than 300 students at each school and are a partnership between First nation and Metis Communities, Bow Valley College, Norquest College, the Government of Alberta and employers in the private sector.
